Wimbledon Tennis, as it is commonly known, is a quintessential British event, and the longest running tennis tournament in the world. The event takes place at the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon, South London SW19. The club was founded in 1868 and called The All England Croquet Club. The game of tennis and the inclusion of the name, was added in 1875, due to its increasing popularity and the waning interest in croquet. The first tennis tournament took place on the 9th of July 1877. The winner took home a 25-guinea trophy and 12-guineas in prize money! If the players knew what the prize money was these days, they’d probably go on strike! Millions of pounds are at stake and the winner can take the rest of the year off.
The original location of the club was between Wimbledon Station (London and South Western Railway) and Worple Road, Wimbledon SW19. It moved to its current location, off Church Road, Wimbledon Park SW19 in 1922.
In those days, all players wore modest attire. The men wore long trousers with long-sleeved shirts. The women wore ankle-length, modest dresses. Nowadays, the whole game has moved on, and reliance on technology has touched every aspect of the game.
The fields across from Church Road are also owed by the club. During the event, these are converted into car parks. Spaces are strictly to be purchased in advance, mostly with tickets. There are a few homeowners and business premises that rent spaces for car parking fairly near the club. You’ll have to be quick though. Spaces are very hard to find!
